THE REDISCOVERY OF GREGOR MENDEL'S WORK

An Historical Retrospect*

ERICH VON TSCHERMAK-SEYSENEGG

Hardtgasse 29, Wien, Austria

Abstract

The last surviving re-discoverer of Mendel's research in the genetics of the garden pea will celebrate his eightieth birthday on November 15, 1951. It is a privilege to be able to present Professor von Tschermak's recollections of the birth pangs of genetics and of the early infancy of the science of heredity a half century ago. We speak surely for the Geneticists in all countries in extending to this Nestor of our science greetings and all good wishes on this notable occasion.
