Morphological mutations induced with ethyl methanesulfonate in oats

Abstract

Several morphotogically distinct mutants induced in Portal and Terra oats (Avena spp.) with ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) are described. A blunt spikelet mutant in Portal, with compact panicle, upright leaves, and stiff straw, was found to have single factor inheritance and to be recessive. The gene symbol bls-I has been suggested. Another mutant in Portal called semiglumeless was found to be partially dominant and segregated 2: 1 in the F2 generation. The gene symbol Sg-I has been proposed for this mutant. In the hulless variety, Terra, two classes of mutants affecting groat characters were identified. Two dominant mutations for vivipary were given the gene symbols Vi-l and Vi-2. A class of mutants conditioning blunt groats was described, but the inheritance of these mutants is uncertain.

Similarities between the semiglumeless character and other known mutants are discussed. Some of the new mutants may be useful as genetic markers. In addition, bls-I may have some agronomic value, particularly as a source of lodging resistance and/or upright leaf angle.
