Abstract

A green spotting of the shanks of Ancona chickens is described. The trait is mainly conditioned by a sex-linked allele, ida. Only a portion of the shank scales show green spotting due to small aggregates of melanin in the dermis; the number of aggregates per scale also varies. In crosses, involving males carrying ida on other stocks with Id, the expression of ida in the pullet progeny is fully as intense as that produced by the ida or id+ alleles.
