Abstract

Two maize inbreds, Ayxl87 and Ay499, were shown to differ markedly with respect to palmitic and stearic acid contents. Fatty acid analyses of the related F1 F2 backcross, and reciprocal backcross generations were performed. The data for stearic acid were consistent with a genetic model of single-gene Mendelian inheritance. The palmitic acid data were less conclusive but suggested that genetic control of this compound is also simple.
