Observations on criteria for within-family selection

DANIEL GIANOLA

The author is Assistant Professor of Systems Analysis and Animal Breeding, Department of Animal Science, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois 61801

Abstract

The expected response to within-family selection becomes larger as the average family size increases from K1 to K2 by a factor

Formula

For a given family size, the response to selection is the same if the individual for which the within-family selection criterion is being computed is excluded in the calculation of the family mean; if an additional number of sibs are excluded from the family mean, the maximum reduction in response to within-family selection is about 29 percent.
