Abstract
A new autosomal, semidominant, spotting mutation (gene symbol Sp) in the Mongolian gerbil is described. Heterozygotes (Sp/+) are characterized by white spots on the head, neck, and nose. In addition, the feet, tail tip, and ventrum are completely white. Preliminary studies suggest that the heterozygotes are also mildly anemic. Homozygotes (Sp/Sp) presumably die shortly before birth and histological examination of skin from stillborn animals revealed an absence of hair follicle pigmentation. The similarities between the Sp gerbil mutant and various spotting mutations in mice are discussed.
