Abstract
Demonstration that the pigmentation-restricting actions associated with mutant alleles at six different genetic loci in the mouse cannot all be identical comes from measurements of white-spotted areas of the pelages of highly congenic yellow-and-white vs. black-and-white mice. The effects on pigmentation restriction were very similar for yellow mice of two distinct mutant genotypes (A v/a and e/e), even though it is known that the yellow-producing action of Av occurs in the hair follicle, while that of e/e is intrinsic to the melanocyte.
