Genetics of brachyptery in a lygaeid bug island population
Department of Zoology, University of Iowa Iowa City, IA 52242.
Abstract
Brachypterous milkweed bugs (Oncopeltus fasciatus) were found in laboratory cultures of bugs collected on the island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. Laboratory crosses revealed that brachyptery was caused by a single recessive Mendelian unit but variation in brachypterous individuals revealed the presence of modifiers. A subsequent field trip to Guadeloupe revealed no brachypterous milkweed bugs or heterozy-gotes for this trait. The fact that brachyptery can be produced by a single Mendelian unit is of potential significance to the evolution of wing polymorphism.
