Abstract

Linear growth rates were determined for heterokaryons formed among lines of Neurospora crassa peviously selected for lineer growth rate. In order to facilitate forcing and detecting the heterokaryotic state, the linked genetic markers ylo-1, ad-1 and al-2, arg-6 were incorporated into the seiected lines through a series of backcrosses. The growth rates of the haterokaryons did not exceed the growth rates of the selected lines. Nuclear ratios in all established heterokaryons shifted from the 1:1 of the inoculum to one predominantly in favor of al-2, arg-6 nuclei. Heterokaryon growth rate was mainly influenced by the al-2, arg-6 genotype. Increasing the percentage of this genotype in the inoculisn, however, hod no significant effect on linear growth rate.
