Recessive coat-color mutation in the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus)

Abstract

An autosomal recessive allele that cause: a gray coat color in the adult spiny mouse, Acomys cahirinus, arose in a breeding colony established in 1968. The mutant adults have the same coat color as normal juveniles. The spines of the corsal pelage of gray animals lack the subapical band of yellow pigment that is found in the adult wild-type animals. The mutation is referred to as gray and the symbol g is tentatively assigned to it. This is the first coat-color variant describe for the spiny mouse and the genetic homology of the mutation is not clear.
