Inheritance of two genes for spine color and linkages in a cucumber cross
Michigan State University East Lansing, Michigan 48824
Abstract
The P1 P2 F2 and F2 generations of the cross Cucumis sativus L. x C. hardwickil R. were grown in a randomized complete block design. Data were collected on spine color, bitterness, and nodes with plstillate flowers, for nodes 120. Using the parental and F1 ranges to define classes, percent gynoecious nodes segregated in a 1:2:1 ratto, and Is explained by segregation of alleles at the F locus (gynoecious sex expression). Bitterness segregated in a 3:1 ratio of bitter: nonbitter. Spine color, contrary to all previous reports, segregated In a 9:7 ratio of black: white spIne in the F2 which was confirmed with F3 data. The gene controlling bitterness was independent of the genes controlling spine color, or the F locus.
