Genetic control of body length at different ages in Poecilia reticulata
Institute of Genetics, University of Bologna Via F. Selmi 140126 Bologna, Italy
Abstract
Phenotypic variability for body length was analyzed at different ages and growth pattern in sublines of Poocilia reticulata (Guppy) at the 8th generation of inbreeding. The results indicated some genetic control of the growth pattern that expresses itself on the phenotype at later developmental stages but is not evident in the early stages. Conversely, genetic control for size is much more evident at the earliest ages measured. It is suggested that the phenotypic manifestation of the same character could provide very different information according to the developmental stage at which it is measured.
