Abstract
Stigma positions in generations derived from interspecific crosses of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (introrse stigma position) and P. coccineus L. (extrorse stigma position) were determined quantitatively by measurement of stigma dimensions. Inheritance of stigma position was found to be quantitative, involving more than six genes, as indicated by the proportion of plants with parental stigma phenotypes in a testcross progeny. Genes determining the introrse stigma of P. vulgaris showed incomplete dominance over those determining the extrorse stigma of P. coccineus in four of five crosses. The remaining cross showed essentially additive gene action for stigma position. In the F2 generation of one of the former crosses, evidence suggesting selective elimination of genes conditioning the extrorse stigma position of P. coccinous was observed. Stigma position heritability estimates, based on the correlation between F3 progeny means and the respective F2 parents, averaged 0.59.
