Phenotypic variation of male-fertile and male-sterile segregates of ms- 1 and ms-2 muskmelon hybrids
U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Services P.O. Box 5098 Salinas, CA 93915
Abstract
Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) progenies segregating for ms-1 and ms-2 were compared with normal plants for phenotypic variation in expression of fertility. Male-fertile plants were phenotypicaily unstable and, thus, may be incorrectly identified as male sterile. Those in progenies segregating for ms-1 or ms-2 generally produced more male-sterlie flowers than plants in populations not segregating for those genes. Male-sterile plants were phenotypically stable when examined visually, but when examined microscopically varied in numbers of distorted, empty pollen sacs and pollen sacs not readily identifiable as normal.
