Abstract
Precocious release of chiasmata was studied in three desynaptic mutants of Locusta migratoria. The probability of chiasma loss from diplotene to metaphase I was similar for all bivalents irrespective of their very different lengths. However, chiasma loss was dependent on the chiasma number of the blvalents: the greater the number of chiasmata in a bivalent the higher the probability of the precocious release of one of them.
