Abstract
Winter collections were made from each of three Mexican populations of Drosophila psoudoobscura, known to differ in their degrees of inversion polymorphism. Twelve isofemale lines from each of the collections were tested for vagility in the Sakai system. The results were compared to those from collections made the preceding spring. It was found that in all three populations there was a decrease in mean vagility score and an increase in level of genotypic variation of the winter samples compared to the spring samples. In both seasons of the year the files from the most chromosomally polymorphic population had the broadest range of vagility scores of all three populations. The differences in behavior of the flies during the two seasons of the year are discussed with reference to the ecological conditions of the areas and the possible role of selection for migratory tendencies.
