Genetics of grasshoppers

I. Linkage studies of albino, reduced eye, and a new trait, bloody, in Melanoplus sanguinipes

William Chapco

Department of Biology, University of Regina Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada S4S 0A2

Abstract

A newly discovered phenotype, bloody, in the migratory grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes is described. The trait is inherited as a single autosomal recessive. Linkage crosses involving bloody (bl), albino (al), reduced eye (re), and two markers of linkage group I reveal the possible existence of two more groups, II (marked by re) and III (marked by bl). Albino appears to belong to group I.
