A study of heterofertilization in diverse lines of maize

Donald S. Robertson

Department of Genetics, Iowa State University Ames, Iowa 50011

Abstract

In maize, extensive studies of heterofertilizatlon in various genetic backgrounds for both pollen and ear parents reveal that heterofertilization percentages vary within a narrow range. The highest percentage observed for a given cross was 5 percent. Most stocks had less than 1 percent heterofertilizatlon. No stock was observed with a percentage as high as the 25 percent reported in previous work on this phenomenon. Evidence is presented that both male and female factors can influence the percentage of heterofertilization. Stronger female than male effects, however, were observed. There is an indication that some of the factors affecting the frequency of heterofertilization have a genetic base, although no single gene effects could be demonstrated.
