Abstract

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to investigate the inheritance of alcohol dehydrogenase and octanol dehydrogenase in the cotton boll weevil. Correlations of P1-F1 banding patterns in the ADH gels indicated the existence of two loci: Adh-1 was monomorphic, and its allele was termed Adh- 157; Adh-2 contained two alleles (Adh-259 and Adh -279 which appeared autosomal and codominant. Correlations of P1-F1 zymograms in the ODH gels suggested that one locus, Odh- 1 was active, and contained two alleles (Odh- 178 and Odh- 193, which also appeared autosomal and codominant. The heterozygotes of both Adh- 2 and Odh- 1 exhibited three bands suggesting that the isozymes of these loci are dimeric. Chi-square analysis for linkage between Adh-2 and Odh-1 indicated they were not linked, and occurred on separate chromosomes.
