Morphology and cytology of interspecific hybrids of Leymus mollis
Department of Agriculture ARS, Crops Research Laboratory, Utah State UniversityUMC 63, Logan, UT 84322
Abstract
The morphology and meiotic behavior of pollen mother cells were studied in hybrids Leymus mollis (2n = 28) × Psathyrostachys juncea (2n = 14), L. Innovatus (2n = 28) X L. mollis, L. salinus (2n = 28) × L. mollis, and L. mallis × L. arenarius (2n = 56). Compared to their parents, all the hybrids possessed intermediate but distinctive glume characteristics. The meiotlc pairing in the hybrids led to the conclusion that L. mollis, like L. Innovatus and L. salinus, has the N genome of P. juncea and can be given the genome formula JJNN. Leymus arenarius was tentatively assigned J1J1J2J2N1N1N2n2 as its genome composition. All hybrids exhibited pollen sterility.
