Abstract

Petunia integrifoiia (P. violacea), a naturally occuring self incompatible (SI) species, is a putative parent of Petunia x hybrida. It was studied for its response to selection for increased pseudo-self compatibility (PSC). After two generations of selection, a population mean of 25.3 percent PSC was achieved with one > 90 percent PSC individual. Heat treatment prior to open flower and bud self pollinations resulted in a greater increase in PSC than ambient temperature bud self pollinations. The response indicates that PSC in P. x hybrida must be regarded as a natural phenomenon and not an artifact of horticultural interspecific hybridization.
