Abstract
A selected macropterous strain of Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.) with an average proportion of the macropterous phenotype of about 65 percent, was crossed with a brachypterous wild strain (about 1 percent of macropters). The progeny was kept under conditions promoting the penetrance of the macropterous trait (long-day photoperiod, 26°C). F1 hybrids from reciprocal crosses of the original strains, F2 hybrids, back-crosses of F1 hybrids to parental strains, and F3 hybrids were obtained. Results suggest that macropterism is a recessive trait, but sex linkage was not demonstrated. A model with two allelic major genes whose penetrance was influenced by modifier genes with additive effects did not completely fit the data, possibly due to an interaction among modifier genes.
