Abstract
Hemoglobin (Hb) variation in dogs has been studied using Immobilme isoelectnc focusing in polyacrylamide gels Eleven families with 51 offspring and a population of 114 dogs were investigated. In the pH range of 7.0 to 7.6, three phenotypes were observed. The Hb types in the 11 families were consistent with the descnbed polymorphism, being controlled by two codominant genes, Ht83 and Ht85. Frequencies in the population among 19 German shepherd dogs were Ht83 = 0.42 and H85 = 0 58. Furthermore, the polymorphism is widespread among the investigated dogs, which came from 45 different breeds, suggesting that the polymorphism is an old one
