Abstract
The inheritance of flower and stem color was investigated using inbred lines of Exacum affineBalf. Parental, F1 hybrid, F2, and backcross generations were evaluated. One locus (w1) conditioned flower color, with violet flower color completely dominant to white flower color. This locus also pleiotropically controlled full expression of stem color, with red stem color completely dominant to green stem color. Two additional loci, dil1, and dil2, intensified red stem color and were hypostatic to the pleiotropic locus w1. The action of dil1 and dil2 can be explained by genetic models of duplicate factors with cumulative effects for intensification of red stem color or complementary action with dosage effects of one locus. Additional research is needed to determine the more appropriate model.
