Abstract

Meiotic chromosome behavior and sporad (spore tetrad) formation of seven diploid Aranda (Vanda × Arachnis of Orchidaceae) cultivars (2n = 2x = 38) belonging to five different crosses were studied. Three cultivars showed partial pairing between Vanda and Arachnis chromosomes, and the remaining four cultivars showed complete or nearly complete failure of chromosome pairing in pollen mother cells. The pairing relationship thus indicated a rather remote homology between Vanda and Arachnis genomes in general. Three general patterns of sporad formation that appeared to be correlated with different meiotic behavior could be recognized among the cultivars investigated.
