Abstract

Reciprocal differences in a petiole trait were observed in segregating populations of cowpea crosses. Mutant plants appeared only vhen Ife BPC, a branched peduncle cultivar, was the female parent. In four crosses, the nonpetiolate leaf mutant gave an F2 segregation ratio of 3 petiolate:1 nonpetiolate, although both parents in each of the crosses had long petioles. However, in a fifth cross, nonpetiolate mutants arose spontaneously. The data suggest that the mutations occurred it different times in the reproductive cycle of the plant. It was confirmed that the nonpetiolate trait is controlled by a single recessive gene and that all the nonpetiolate mutations occurred at the same locus. Ife BPC cytoplasm seems to provide a suitable environnent for factors similar to controlling elenents to induce high-frequency mutations at certain loci.
