Abstract
The immediate (M1 generation) response to mutagenic treatment was evinced for three induced high alkaloid (morphine)yielding mutants, namely red-petaled (RP), big-capsulated (BC), and pinnately cleft-leaved (PCL), in Papaver somniferum L. Narrow-sense heritability for various metric traits ranged from 9.20% to 29.06%. The highest heritability estimates were observed for morphine content. The PCL mutant revealed a quasiquantitative nature of inheritance, governed by plural genes, in contrast to the RP and BC mutants wherein the inheritance was governed by single dominant genes in Mendelian fashion. The study emphasizes the use of opium poppy as an ideal system for demonstrating quasiquantitative inheritance.
