Linkage Analysis of 10 Enzyme Loci in the Genus Pomoxis (Pisces: Centrarchidae)
Center for Aquatic Ecology, Illinois Natural History Survey, Champaign, and the Department of Animal Sciences, University of Illinois Urbana
Abstract
The potential linkage relationships of 10 enzyme-encoding loci were determined from 651 individuals from 12 different cross types constructed in the laboratory involving interspecific hybrid crappie (Pomoxis annularis and P. nigromaculatus). The results indicated that eight loci segregated independently. Two loci, FH-1* and PGM-1*, consistently jointly segregated in all crosses and thus were assigned to a new linkage group III in centrarchid fishes. The recombination frequency, r, between these loci was 136 ± .017 for the backcross progeny. The inheritance data from F2 hybrid progeny yielded estimates of r that ranged from .046 ± .028 to .175 ± .058 for these loci. Because the allelic distributions for these loci were significantly heterogeneous for both loci among F2 crosses (
2; P < .005), the results from these crosses could not be pooled. Comparison of linkage results from both backcross and F2 progeny with those from previous fish linkage studies supports the hypothesis of linkage group conservation among teleost fishes.
