Abstract
The occurrence of polytene chromosomes in the anther tapetal cells of a bean species, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, is described. These structures were observed mainly during the time of pollen exine formation and always in a diploid number. Their general morphology was similar to their own mitotic pro-phase chromosomes and to Phaseolus polytenics. In relation to other polytene chromosomes they were relatively small and displayed a small nucleolus. Such features suggest a low replication level of V. unguiculata anther polytenics. Nevertheless, they were found in a large number of cells and in a conveniently manipulated tissue, making them suitable for further cytogenetic studies.
