Using Average Relative Fitness (W¯) for Intergroup Comparisons: A Caution
Department of Biology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Blacksburg, VA 24061
Abstract
The average relative fitnesses (
s) of different populations are used at times for mterpopulation comparisons of fitness. Such comparisons should be made with extreme caution. The data presented here show that the
s of several populations of Drosophila melanogaster, comparable in their calculated values, did not reveal a 12-fold difference between populations with respect to one component of fitness, the mating success of male flies.
