Erratum
In the July/August 1995 issue of the Journal of Heredity (Vol. 86, no. 4), the article "Microsatellite Analysis of Paternity and Reproduction in Arctic Grizzly Bears," by L. Craighead, D. Paetkau, H. V. Reynolds, E. R. Vyse, and C. Strobeck (pp. 255261), erroneously reported finding 3 paternal alleles in a litter of 3 cubs of female grizzly bear #1097. This led to the conclusion that there was "strong evidence of multiple paternity in this litter." Subsequently, in 1996, one of the authors (D. Paetkau) determined that the DNA samples of 2 of the cubs in this litter were identical to other samples labeled as different individuals. The authors have been unable to examine additional samples of these individuals to confirm their familial relationships. Because this apparent mislabeling calls into question the integrity of the samples of 2 of the 3 siblings in the pedigree of #1097, and one sample in the pedigree of #1439, multiple paternity cannot be confidently demonstrated.
