Letter from the Editors

Dear Colleagues,

The 3rd Canine and Feline Genome and Genetic Disease Conference was held in 2006. As in the past the international scientific committee organized an outstanding program for scientists working on companion animals, comparative genomics, hereditary diseases, and animal models of human genetic diseases. The local organizers led by Niels Pedersen provided an excellent venue on the University of Califonia at Davis campus and, despite being in held in August, surprisingly comfortable weather. While in 2004 in Utrecht the completion of canine genome project was the focus, a first glimpse at the extraordinary applications of the canine genome information in the study of morphologic and disease traits was received this year (Lindblad-Toh et al. 2005; Ostrander et al. 2006; Special Issue 2005). However, the first release of the 1.9x feline genome sequence was certainly the highlight of this conference (Pontius et al. 2007). The conference was again generously sponsored by Nestle Purina PetCare with additional contributions from the Canine Health and Winn Feline Foundations. Beside the keynotes by Gorden Lark, Stephen O'Brien, and Elaine Ostrander, 100 outstanding talks and posters were presented during this conference (http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ccah/conference). All attendees were invited to contribute to this special issue of the Journal of Heredity. We are very pleased to present an interesting selection of 24 original studies on canine and feline genetics in this July 2007 supplement of the Journal of Heredity again kindly supported by Nestle Purina PetCare. While you will certainly enjoy reading this special issue and many other exciting papers in other leading journals, we also wanted to make you aware that the 4th International Canine and Feline Genome and Genetic Disease Conference will be held from 22 to 24 May 2008 in Saint Malo in the Brittany of France. For more information, see http://www.canine-felinegenomicsmeeting.com/).

We hope to see you there.
