The cover. Sonchus canariensis (Sch. Bip.) Boulos (Asteraceae) with Euphorbia canariensis L. (Euphorbiaceae) in Andén Verde, Gran Canaria, The Canary Islands, Spain. Sonchus canariensis, one of the woody sow-thistle species endemic to the Macaronesian Islands, is a tall shrub up to 3 m and a capitulum up to 1.5 cm across with about 100–150 florets. On the north-facing seaside slopes of Andén Verde, Gran Canaria huge clumps of E. canariensis protect a few plants of the very rare, tall S. canariensis. Euphorbia canariensis is a common tall succulent shrub with square or 5-sided cactus-like stems and endemic to the Canaries. (See Kim, pp. 293–299.)
