The cover. The Sable Island horses belong to a unique feral horse population living on a sand bar located approximately 200 km off the east coast of Nova-Scotia, Canada. Believed to have originated mainly from horses confiscated from the early French settlers in the latter half of the 18th century, the Sable Island horses gained legal protection in 1960. The current population shares common ancestry with other sport and light draft horse breeds commonly found in Eastern Canada (see Plante et al. pp 594–602). Photo by Zoe Lucas.
